Gabriela Burdsall and her dance troop in the famous staircase at La Guarida in Havana adorned with Fidel’s famous ‘Country or Death’ quote.
Artist, dancer, choreographer and one of my dearest friends, Gabriela was a member of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, a company co-founded by her American grandmother Lorna Burdsall who was married to Manuel Pineiro aka Red Beard. Manuel was heavily involved with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara as they planned to overthrow Batista, and became Raul Castro's right-hand man during the revolution.
So for me this shot is about history. The political history of Cuba and Gabriela’s own family history intertwined in an explosion of human movement as her shock of short blonde hair draws us in.
