Contemporary Dancer, Havana, 2015

Abandon. Submission almost. A potent bleach-blonde booted femininity, hand resting on the door of the old car. I wanted to tell a story of Cuba and its fascinating past. The incredible energy, colour and vibrancy of its present. And its future through the art that pulses through its communities.

Artist, dancer, choreographer and one of my dearest friends, Gabriela was a member of Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, a company co-founded by her American grandmother Lorna Burdsall who was married to Manuel Pineiro aka Red Beard. Manuel was heavily involved with Fidel Castro and Che Guevara as they planned to overthrow Batista, and became Raul Castro's right-hand man during the revolution.
