Steam Engine, Colorado, 1994

Road trip. Just me. Motels and bars and diners, talking to strangers, locals; looking for America, I suppose. A truck stop just outside Denver. My waitress told me her father used to work on the steam engines and gave me directions to the service depot. The oily blue-colour land of the free. And I’d like to think that’s her father standing right there in that pale silhouette of steam. A ghost of the past.
